A mother holds her hands over her child's sore knee and the pain goes away. A man cups his palms and imagines a light of blessing filling every part of his being, and feels at peace. A kitten bats playfully at a ribbon as a woman traces an ancient symbol in the air above.

What is this?

This is the Japanese practise of energy-healing known today as Reiki (pronounced ray kee). Not intended to substitute for western diagnosis and medicine, but to deeply relax a body and stimulate its own self-healing powers.

Reiki was discovered in 1926 by a man named Mikao Usui. He had gone to meditate by a waterfall on Mt. Kurama. After a mysterious light approached him and an odd feeling ran through him, he decided to get up and walk down the mountain. On his way he cut his foot. Reaching down, he touched it and it healed.

That was when Mikao Usui realized his seeking had been answered. He decided to share the use of this power with his family and later with students. To do this, he would inititiate a person, known as attuning them, and then teach them how to sense injuries and to allow the reiki to flow.

Later teachers added certain symbols to the practise which can be traced in the air or on your palm, to quicken the healing and relaxation.

Reiki was brought to the west by a woman from Hawaii, Mrs Takata, who had gone to Japan for her own illness, and had recovered. This "western style" of reiki is now called Usui Shiki Ryoho. From it has come all the popular styles such as Seichem, Medicine Buddha, Ama Deus, Shamballa... though their founders may be reluctant to acknowledge this.
